All humans make mistakes. The experiences of our mistakes gives us the opportunity to learn from them. This in turn advances us spiritually. Beating yourself up over past mistakes and perceived faults do no one any good, least of all yourself. Instead, be your own best friend. Turning a negative mind set into a positive one boosts your self-confidence and encourages success on all levels of your life.
To be your own best friend, start by writing a list of all the things you like about yourself and your current life and lifestyle. Write down what you are good at … Write down all the things you’d like to be good at … Ask yourself what’s stopping you from doing them … and answer honestly.
As life mirrors back to us, make it a practice to extend kindness to yourself and others. We can choose to be critical and judgemental of ourselves and others – or we can choose to see through the perceived faults and acknowledge the positives. When you choose to be your own best friend you choose to see your faults and foibles as just a part of who you are. If you are not happy with those (perceived) faults, give yourself the opportunity to work on them. What’s stopping you?
Self-condemnation is one of the biggest challenges on the spiritual path and can hold back our spiritual growth. Choose to treat yourself well. Buy yourself treats now and again … small things you enjoy and derive pleasure from. This can be anything from flowers to perfume to hobby supplies and the like. Be your own best friend and buy yourself beautiful gifts that YOU like. You know yourself better than anyone else, so do things that please you and bring you joy.
When we feel and send out positive signals, we attract that energy back to ourselves. Lifting someone’s self-esteem in turn boosts our own self-esteem. A genuine joyfulness spreads to those around us and they too will become joyful. Smiling at someone most often results in them smiling back at you. Laughter begets laughter.
When you choose to be your own best friend your positive energy and the vibration of your self-love and happiness will have far reaching effects, as your ‘light’ touches and uplifts yourself as well as all around you.
By being your own best friend you will come to value yourself and your uniqueness.
