IMMUNE SYSTEM BOOSTERS – HERBS

As an immunostimulant, Astragalus activates and heightens the immune system. Astragalus prevents the onset of colds and flus as it contains strong anti-viral properties.
CALENDULA (Calendula officinialis)
Calendula is a cholagogue, styptic, anti-inflammatory, vulnerary, antiseptic and emmenagogue. It is a gentle remedy when taken internally for mild digestive ailments. A tea made of Calendula will help to increase perspiration to reduce fever and is said to be good for bringing out the spots in cases of measles.
Calendula is a popular herb for stimulating the immune system and for preventing infection. Calendula is commonly used as a healing and soothing wound cream or lotion as research has shown that extracts (or a tincture) of Calendula significantly stimulates tissue regeneration and the healing of wounds.
CAT’S CLAW (Uncaria tomentose)
Cat’s Claw stimulates the immune system and is an inhibitor of tumours and degenerative diseases. Cat’s Claw has anti-oxidant properties that protect cells from damage caused by free-radicals, and contains anti-viral, anti-tumour and anti-inflammatory compounds.
ECHINACEA (Echinacea augustifolia)
Echinacea is used to combat infectious diseases from recurring due to decreased body defences. Echinacea is an inflammatory, and an anti-cancer. Echinacea increased the defence mechanisms of the immune system by stimulating humora and cellularl immunity, and by increasing the number of leukocytes.
Echinacea contains an inhibitor of hyaluronidase, which is an enzyme produced by many bacteria which allows the spread of germs through the tissues. Echinacea has fungicidal and bacterial properties and inhibits viral growth.
Echinacea works on the respiratory system by inhibiting and reducing infections in cases such as pharyngitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, colds and influenza.
Garlic is known for its cold-fighting abilities amongst others. Garlic increases the potency of two important cells of the immune system: macrophages and T-lymphocytes. Garlic is anti-biotic powers and strengthens the immune system.
The immune system boosting properties of Garlic is due to its sulphur-containing compounds such as sulphides and allicin.
Garlic stimulates the multiplication of infection-fighting white cells, and increases the efficiency of antibody production. Garlic also acts as an anti-oxidant as it reduces the build-up of free radicals in the bloodstream.

ST JOHN’S WORT (Hypericum perforatum)
St John’s Wort contains numerous compounds that possess biological actions. These constituents include naphthodianthrones, hypericin and pseudohypericin.
St John’s Wort also contains a range of flavonoids including quercetin, quercitrin, amentoflavone and hyperin. It also contains the phloroglucinols hyperforin and adhyperforin, and is an effective anti-viral agent.
Tumeric is known to be beneficial in treating osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Tumeric contains high concentrations of curcumin, which has been shown to contain immune boosting properties and strong cold and influenza fighting compounds.
