CELERY SEEDS (Apium graveolens)

Celery seeds contain a vast array of healing properties such as counteracting body acidity, lowering blood pressure and relieving arthritis symptoms.

Celery originated in England and southern Europe, and now grows in most temperate zones around the world. Celery stalks and leaves are used as food, whilst the seeds are used medicinally.
Indian Ayurvedic physicians use Celery seeds for colds and flus, water retention, poor digestion, hiccups, arthritis and liver and spleen ailments. Celery seeds are generally used as a diuretic and an anti-rheumatic, nervine, carminative, an alterative and a urinary antiseptic. Celery seed is a tonic, an appetite enhancer, a carminative, and is a strong diuretic.
Celery seeds are most effective when used for the nervous system, the kidneys and bladder, as a blood tonic and joint pain reliever. It stimulates kidney function as well as the excretion of uric acid, and is very useful in the treatment of cystitis, gout and rheumatoid arthritis. Celery seeds, when chewed whole or made into a tea, helps to eliminate toxins that aggravate gout and arthritis. Research has shown that a decoction of Celery seed can significantly reduce hypertension, nervousness, depression and apathy.
A decoction of Celery seeds has been shown to be beneficial in the relief of chest congestion, rheumatism and bronchitis. A tea made of Celery seeds can be most helpful in clearing and healing skin problems, as well as acting as a stimulating circulatory tonic.
When combined with other herbs such as Marshmallow and Dandelion root, Celery seeds have excellent demulcent and diuretic properties; and when combined with Alfalfa, makes an excellent remedy for arthritic conditions. 1 teaspoon of ground or crushed Celery seeds to 1 cup of water taken daily can ease all symptoms.
Celery seeds can be taken as a fresh juice, as a tea, salt or in powder form, and is available as a tincture in extract form or as capsules and tablets.
Celery seeds have strong diuretic properties and can upset the body’s mineral balance so must be used cautiously.
